Sammy The Snake

Sammy the Snake is often found giving himself a hug. He’s quite the introvert, loving his alone time and spending his days wrapped up, daydreaming, in the trees.

Skill Level: Beginner

This no-sew crochet pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms, complete with clear instructions and  pictures to help you along the way. Sammy the Snake is crocheted in the round/continuous spirals without joining the rounds. I suggest using a stitch marker or different color yarn to keep track of each round. Sammy the Snake is crocheted in super bulky chenille yarn and is approximately 22 inches long from top of head to tip of tail. Be aware that size may vary depending on the yarn and hook size used. Gauge is not particularly important, just be consistent with the tension you are using. And most importantly, have fun!

Abbreviations

  • sc – single crochet
  • st/sts – stitch(es)

Sammy The Snake Pattern Example

6 sc into a Magic Circle  {6 sts}
R1 starts with 6 single crochet in a magic circle

🧶 When making a magic circle in chenille yarn, I’ve gotten good results when I add 3 stitches, tighten, then add the last 3 stitches and tighten again.
This is my preferred way of making a magic circle with chenille yarn:https://youtu.be/aOSTJasSaPM

(inc, sc) 6 times {18 sts}
(2 single crochets into a stitch, then single crochet in the next stitch) – repeat that sequence a total of 6 times for a total of 18 stitches

(dec, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times {18 sts}
(join 2 single crochets into 1, and then single crochet in next 2 stitches) – repeat that sequence a total of 6 times for a total of 18 stitches

  • R11: (dec, sc) 6 times {12 sts}
  • R12: (dec) 6 times {6 sts}
  • R13: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 2 times {8 sts}
  • Note: A few notes as you continue on with single crochet rounds. If you don't plan on wrapping the snake, feel free to stuff the whole tail as you crochet. If you plan on wrapping the snake, as pictured, then I have a few suggestions. Stuff the head and neck well up to round 17. Then begin to stuff lightly as you continue on with the tail, when you hit Round 50, stuff very very lightly so that part of the tail can lay flat.
  • R14-65: sc in next 8 sts {8 sts}
  • R66: (dec, sc in next 6 sts) {7 sts}
  • R67: (sc in next 5 sts, dec) {6 sts}
  • R68: (dec, sc in next 4 sts) {5 sts}
  • R69: (sc in next 3 sts, dec) {4 sts}
  • Fasten off and leave a long piece of yarn to sew the tail shut.
