It’s that time of year when I start thinking about accessories for the colder weather. It’s not quite cold enough for an infinity scarf yet, but it’s perfect crochet cowl weather (at least at night)! I combined two strands of yarn to make my own unique yarn color for this textured Waffle Stitch Crochet Cowl pattern.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you may have noticed my recent fixation (obsession?) with the various King Cole “beaches” DK yarns. These three lines of yarn have the same yardage, fiber count, and thickness so they can easily be substituted for each other. Beaches DK is a variegated yarn, Island Beaches DK is a single color variation, and Paradise Beaches DK is a solid yarn. All three are a super soft acrylic and polyamide blend. You can buy them through your local yarn shop or online at LoveCrafts or Wool Warehouse UK. There’s also King Cole Stripe DK yarn, which is 100% acrylic and has a bit more yardage in each skein. Now why does any of this matter? Well, if you’ve been following me for a while you know that I’m not really a “neutral” person. I don’t do a lot of crochet with solid browns or beige or cream yarn. I’m maybe a tad too colorful for that.
But.
When I saw these yarns…
In my mind, I knew that if I combined them TOGETHER I would have the most fabulous caramel brown yarn that never existed (except in my mind). And, I think I was right!
Both of these skeins coordinate really well. Island Beaches DK is a semi-solid yarn and Stripe DK is a mostly white yarn with stripes of color, so when combined they create a really interesting but matching look. You could do the same thing with pretty much any of the coordinating colors in these lines. Bonus brownie points: when the two strands are held together, it basically has the same weight as a medium (worsted/#4) yarn, which is my favorite for fall crochet cowls.

Waffle Stitch Cowl
Crochet Cowl Pattern by Underground Crafter
This textured cowl is crocheted with two strands of yarn held together to create a unique color pattern.
Finished Size
- Teen/Adult: 24” (61 cm) circumference x 6.5” (16.5 cm) width.
Materials
- King Cole Island Beaches DK yarn (70% acrylic/30% polyamide, 3.5 oz/100 g, 278 yd/255 m) – 1 skein in 4526 Pebble, or approximately 255 yd (233.5 m) in any light weight yarn.
- King Cole Stripe DK yarn (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz/100 g, 320 yd/290 m) – 1 skein in 4508 Caramel Stripe, or approximately 255 yd (233.5 m) in any light weight yarn.
- US Size K-10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- 22 sts in pattern = 6.5” (16.5 cm) wide. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- FPdc – front post double crochet – FPdc = front post double crochet = Yo, insert hook from front around back to front of stitch in previous Round, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice. A helpful video tutorial for this stitch is available below.

Pattern Notes
- Cowl is crocheted flat in rows and then joined with a slip stitch seam.
- Entire cowl and seam is crocheted holding 2 strands of light (DK/#3 weight) yarn together. Alternatively, substitute 1 strand of medium (worsted/#4 weight) yarn. Hook size and yardage requirements may vary.

Pattern Instructions
Cowl
- Holding 1 strand from each of 2 yarns together throughout, ch 24 (or any multiple of 4, + 4 sts).
- Row 1: Turn, skip 3 ch (counts as first dc), dc in next next 21 sts. (22 sts)
- Row 2: (RS) Turn, ch 2 (counts as hdc), *FPdc around next st, dc in next 3 sts; rep from * across to last st, hdc in next st.
- Row 3: Turn, ch 2 (counts as hdc), *FPdc around each of next 3 sts, dc in next st; rep from * across to last st, hdc in next st.
- Rep Rows 2-3 until cowl measures approximately 24” (61 cm) in length, ending after a repeat of Row 2. Do not fasten off.
Assembly and Finishing
- Fold cowl across length to join short edges together with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes). For a ridged seam (shown below), join on RS with wrong sides facing each other.
- For a less visible seam, turn cowl to wrong side and join on wrong side with RS facing each other. Turn cowl inside out after seaming.
- With yarn needle, weave in ends.
