Stevie the Stygimoloch – Free Dinosaur Crochet Pattern

Stevie the Stygimoloch is the latest dinosaur amigurumi to add to my collection! I love making dinosaurs that aren’t as well known, and I think this crochet dino was a great choice!

dinosaur amigurumi for a stygimoloch crochet pattern

If you are fan of Jurassic World, you will find a Stygimoloch, “Stiggy”, in Fallen Kingdom. Fun fact, the Stygimoloch was initially thought to be it’s own dinosaur, but it was later decided that he is just a juvenile Pachycephalosaurus.

Stitch Abbreviations

st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
SC2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (invisible decrease is recommended)

Special Stitches

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
  • All pieces are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
  • Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
  • Body, head, legs, arms, horns, and tail require stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work to ensure the piece is completely filled. Do not add stuffing to the spikes.
  • See tutorial photos.

 Align the tip of the dome to approximately R11, between the eyes, and attach the dome to the top of the head.

 Attach front horn just below the tip of the dome, over R7-11.

Using color A (shown as yellow), embroider 2 nostrils on the head, on either side of the front horn, over R5-6/R6-7 (one row of each color), leaving about 2 sts between the nostril and the front horn.

Attach crown horns around the back of the dome with large horns in the back and small horns in the front in the following sequence: small, medium, large, large, medium, small. See tutorial photos.

 Attach head to body so that the nose is facing straight out, attaching body to approximately R15-20 of the bottom of the head.

 Attach legs between R7-8 of the body, with 3 sts showing between.

 Using color D (shown as white), embroider 3 nails on each leg, over R5-7, leaving about 2 sts between each nail.

Attach arms over R19-26 on each side of the body. At the top of the arms, leave approximately 12 sts between each arm across the front of the body. At the bottom of the arms, leave approximately 18 sts between each arm across the front of the body.

Using color D (shown as white), embroider 3 nails on each arm, over R4-5, leaving about 2 sts between each nail.

  1. This is so cute! I love crocheting dinosaurs and am often looking up images of others’ work for inspiration; I was really excited to see a more obscure species like this which there aren’t many patterns for. I love the look of the spikes!
