Free Tunisian Crochet Pattern – Diagonal Lattice Headband

The Diagonal Lattice Tunisian Headband is a beginner-friendly, Tunisian crochet project that is just perfect to keep you warm in the winter cold!

Moreover, with Christmas just behind the corner, this headband makes such a gorgeous Christmas gift!

The design of the Diagonal Lattice Tunisian Headband is very simple, thus perfect to practice your Tunisian crochet skills and learn a new stitch.
I actually designed this headband to match my Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho, which I designed for a guest post on the undergroundcrafter.com blog.

You can grab a printable PDF copy of the Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho both on Ravelry and LoveCrafts.

For our headbands, we will be using the same stitch as the main body of the Misty Grey Tunisian Poncho, which is the diagonal lattice stitch. Don’t worry if you have no clue how to make the diagonal lattice Tunisian stitch because I will guide you through it with step-by-step photos.

In the Indications Size by Size section, you will find all the info regarding the number of chains needed for each size and the indicative number of rows to crochet to reach the desired length.

Materials

  • Aran/Worsted Weight, Medium (4) Yarn
  • 8.0-mm (L/11 US, 0 UK) Crochet Hook

You do not need a Tunisian hook for this project. Your regular hook will work fine as long as it does not have a large handle.

Yarn Recommendations

I used Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Aran in colors Kingfisher Blue (834), Misty Grey (803), and Bright Peach (811).

Feel free to use any comparable medium-weight yarn that meets gauge.

Crochet Abbreviations (US Terms)

Ch – Chain
Return – Standard Tunisian Return
Sk – Skip
Sl St – Slip Stitch
St – Stitch
Tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch
Yo – Yarn Over

Special Stitches

Standard Tunisian Return
Yo, pull through the first loop on your hook, *yo, pull through two loops*. Repeat in between * for the stitches on your hook. At the end of the return pass, you will only have one loop on your hook.

Pattern Notes

  • Always skip the very first vertical bar.
  • The first stitch is included in the stitch count.
  • The last stitch is worked under both loops of the final ch from the previous row.
  • The instructions below only describe the forward pass. The return pass is always a Standard Tunisian Return.

How to Create the Twist on your Headband

Step 1. Lay flat your crocheted piece with the right side facing up.
Step 2. Fold the two ends in half keeping the wrong side on the outside.
Step 3. Take the folded half nearest to you on the right and insert it in between the folded, left side.
Step 4. Keeping the four halves aligned and tight together, sew the top rows together.

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

    • Hi, unfortunately I don’t have videos. Where do you think the problem might be with your headband? Is it the stitch that looks weird or do you have troubles with making the closing twist?
