Bulky Yarn Crochet Hat Pattern: Twist Top Beanie

I’m so excited to be joining my friends, Amy at The Stitchin’ Mommy and Rhondda at Oombawka Design, for the second annual Scarf of the Month Crochet Along! My contribution is the Twist Top Beanie, a super bulky yarn crochet hat pattern. This pattern uses simple stitches to get great texture and it works up quickly in super bulky yarn.

I love projects that are simple to make but look more intricate. If you feel the same, you’ll definitely want to make this super bulky yarn crochet hat pattern! The Twist Top Beanie uses various crochet loops on the half double crochet to get a lot of texture, and twists because it’s worked in the round. It’s much simpler than it looks and in super bulky yarn, you’ll be finished in no time!

For my version, I used King Cole Timeless Super Chunky, a super chunky (#6/super bulky) weight yarn that you can find at your local yarn shop or online at LoveCrafts. Timeless Super Chunky is an acrylic/alpaca blend yarn with a delightful twist.

This pattern is part of the 2021 Hat of the Month Crochet Along with The Stitchin’ Mommy and Oombawka Design. Visit their sites for links to the other patterns included in this fun CAL.

Twist Top Beanie

Bulky Yarn Crochet Hat Pattern by Underground Crafter

This cozy, textured beanie works up quickly in a super bulky yarn. The stitch pattern highlights the twist from crocheting in the round.

Finished Size

  • Teen/Adult: 21” (53.5 cm) hat circumference x 8.5” (21.5 cm) height.

Materials

  • King Cole Timeless Super Chunky yarn (90% acrylic/10% alpaca, 3.5 oz/100 g/87 yd/80 m) – 1 skein each in 4454 Grey (CA) and 4453 Turquoise (CB), or approximately 81 yd (74 m) in CA and 58 yd (53 m) in CB in any super bulky weight yarn.
  • US Size K-10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • US Size L-11/9 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.

Gauge

  • 6 sts = 2” (5 cm) wide in pattern for Hat Band with smaller hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.
  • 11 hdc = 4” (10 cm) wide with larger hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Abbreviations Used in This Pattern

  • 3L – third (back) loop only – Heart Hook Home has a helpful video for identifying the third loop (3L) on hdc stitches here.
  • 3Ldec – third loop decrease – [Yo, insert hook in 3L of next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook. The 3Ldec is a variation of the hdc2tog decrease. A helpful video tutorial for the hdc2tog is shown below. When working the decreases for this pattern, be sure to insert the hook into the appropriate loop (third) as indicated.
  • If you can’t see the video tutorial for the hdc2tog above, click HERE to watch it on YouTube.
  • BL – back loop only – Fiber Flux has a helpful tutorial for identifying the back loop here.
  • CA – Color A
  • CB – Color B
  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rep – repeat
  • Rnd(s) – Round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over
  • *Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
  • [] Repeat instructions between brackets as indicated.

Pattern Notes

  • Hat Band is crocheted flat in rows until it reaches desired hat circumference length. After seaming Hat Band, stitches are picked up along long edge of seamed Hat Band. Hat is worked even in joined rounds, then decreased to crown, and then cinched closed.
  • A helpful tutorial for the slip stitch seam is available here.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of row or round does not count as a stitch.
  • Change colors when joining Rounds with sl st. Carry the unworked yarn along the inside of the hat when not in use. When picking up color, be sure not to pull too tightly or hat will pucker. After CA is fastened off, crochet over the yarn tail as you crochet. Fiber Flux has a helpful tutorial explaining how to do this here. For best results, point yarn tail end towards inside of hat.
  • A helpful photo tutorial showing how to cinch and close a bottom-up crochet hat is available here.
