Inspiration for the Crochet Navy and White Blanket
The stitch pattern reminds me of the sea waves, and the easy crochet pattern is very relaxing and quick to make. The size is perfect for wrapping a small baby and could be used as a cot blanket, or a floor mat.
The Nautical theme is on-trend this year, and the neutral colours would be suitable as a gender-neutral gift. Navy and white is always welcome for any new parent!

Yarn
The yarn I used is a beautiful soft DK Cotton yarn from King Cole called Cottonsoft DK. It is 100% cotton and is perfect for baby crochet. You can get the yarn in so many colours, so you will have plenty to choose from! Find your local stockists here
My blanket measures 29 x 32in [74 x 81cm] but you could easily use this pattern as a recipe, to make any size you like.

Materials
King Cole Cottonsoft DK : 100% Cotton; 100g/210m
- 3 balls French Navy (741) – Yarn A
- 2 balls of White (710) – Yarn B
- 4.5mm crochet hook
- Yarn Needle
Notes
- You can use any DK Weight/Light Worsted Weight yarn to make this blanket – approx 800 – 1000m. You can also use a different yarn weight to make a smaller or larger blanket, using a matching hook but keep in mind your yardage requirements will vary.
- I use a larger than recommended crochet hook to give a looser drape and more texture
- Instructions are given to make the blanket pictured in this pattern. You can make a smaller or larger blanket by chaining a shorter or longer foundation chain. Stitch Multiple is 6 ch (+3)
- Gauge is not essential for this project
- The pattern is written in US Crochet Terms

Special stitches
Double Crochet 5 together – Dc5tog (cluster): Yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops left on hook), (yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) 4 times, yarn over and draw yarn through all 6 loops on hook.
Changing Colours – Work the last yarn over of the row with the next colour, for a neat colour change
Instructions for Crochet Nautical Baby Blanket
Using Yarn A and 4.5mm hook, chain 111, or a multiple of 6 sts + 1, + 2 for the foundation row
Tip: Always make a few extra chains for the foundation row in case you miss one or two, it saves you starting over! You can unpick them later
Row 1: 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 3 dc), skip 2 ch, 1 sc in next ch, * skip 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch, skip 2 ch, 1 sc in next ch; rep from * to last 3 ch, skip 2 ch, 3 dc in last ch, turn. Fasten off yarn
Row 2: Using Yarn B, ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 sc in 1st st, * ch 2, dc5tog over next 5 sts, ch 2, 1 sc in next st; rep from * ending by working last sc in top of t-ch, turn
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), 2 dc in 1st st, skip 2 ch, * 1 sc in top of next cluster, skip 2 ch, 5 dc in next sc, skip 2 ch; rep from * to last cluster, 1 sc in top of cluster, skip 2 ch, 3 dc in last sc, turn. Fasten off yarn
Rows 4 – 68: Repeat rows 2 – 3, and row 2 once more, following colour sequence above. Do not fasten off and continue with Yarn A
Tip: You can continue the pattern repeat until you are happy with the size, just make sure you finish on row 2
Border
Turn piece so you are now working down the first side of the blanket.
Round 1:
Tip – On the 2 long sides, I worked 1 sc in each sc row end and 2 sc in each dc row end.
- Side 1 – Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc in same st (corner made), work sc evenly down side 1 (see tip) until you reach the next corner, [1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc] in corner,
- Bottom Row – * 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, 1 sc in bottom of 5 dc; rep from * across, ending with [1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc] in next corner,
- Side 2 – Repeat side 1
- Top – 1 sc in 1st st, * 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, 1 sc in top of 5dctog, 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * across, ending with a sl st to beg sc.
Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), hdc in each st around, working [1 hdc, ch 1, 1 hdc] in each corner ch-1 sp, join with a sl st to beg hdc.
Round 3: Repeat round 2, working in BLO of each st.
Round 4: Repeat round 3. Fasten off yarn and weave in all threads.

Row three says two dc in first stitch then skip two chains and go into top of cluster. But I would have to skip four to get to top. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi! You skip the ch 2 from the previous row and then make a st on top of the cluster. Did you look at the pictures in the stitch tutorial post? https://www.anniedesigncrochet.com/2020/02/21/how-to-crochet-interlocking-shell-stitch/

Is this a yarn eater stitch please? Love to make it but not sure if I have enough yarn.
It uses yarn the same way a double crochet blanket would, so I would think not!
Why do we need to fasten off in the 3rd row of the border?
Hmm… I see what you mean! I made another version of this blanket when I was testing it, that had a different final colour for round 4. I will edit it now:)
