Sweet Spring Tulip Bulb Amigurumi (Free Crochet Pattern)

Dear fellow crocheters,

I'm excited to share with you my Sweet Spring Tulip Bulb!

If you're looking for something happy, peppy, and bright to add to your home and welcome in the beautiful Spring season, I think this little tulip amigurumi will do just that!  It's quick and easy to work up using basic amigurumi stitches, and I designed it so that the bulb, stem, and tulip are all worked in one piece.  The two leaves are so easy to crochet and done separately, but they're the only two parts that require sewing onto your tulip bulb!

This lovely Tulip makes a great Valentine’s Day gift, Mother’s Day gift, Teacher Appreciation gift, or Spring birthday gift!  You can easily customize it with your giftee’s favorite color flower, or add embellishments and more~

If you'd like to get some inspiration from others, feel free to check out the Creation Gallery to see finished tulip bulbs from around the world, using this pattern!

~ CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS ~

Important Notes (Read before beginning!)
  • The bulb, stem, and tulip are all crocheted in one piece. Do not fasten off until instructed to do so.

BULB

Begin with bulb-colored yarn (white or off-white).

R1: In MR, sc 6. (6 sts)
R2: Inc around. (12 sts)
R3: (Sc, inc) x 6. (18 sts)
R4: (Sc 2, inc) x 6. (24 sts)
R5: (Sc 3, inc) x 6. (30 sts)
R6: (Sc 4, inc) x 6. (36 sts)
R7-R13: Sc around. (36 sts)
R14: (Sc 10, dec) x 3. (33 sts)
R15: (Sc 9, dec) x 3. (30 sts)
R16: (Sc 3, dec) x 6. (24 sts)

Insert 10mm plastic safety eyes between R10-R11, 8 sts apart. Sew on the mouth and eyelashes if desired. Then, stuff base of the bulb with pellets to provide weight and allow it to stand upright on its own.

R17: (Sc 2, dec) x 6. (18 sts)

Do not fasten off, as you will continue with the stem. Finish stuffing the top of the bulb by adding fiberfill stuffing.

STEM

Note: Do not continue stuffing at this time.
Switch to stem-colored yarn (green).

R18: (Sc, dec) x 6. (12 sts)
R19: (Sc 2, dec) x 3. (9 sts)
R20-R29: Sc around. (9 sts)

Do not fasten off, as you will continue with the tulip.

TULIP

Switch to tulip-colored yarn (pink).

R30: Inc around. (18 sts)
R31: (Sc 2, inc) x 6. (24 sts)
R32: Sc around. (24 sts)
R33: (Sc 6, dec) x 3. (21 sts)
R34: (Sc 5, dec) x 3. (18 sts)
R35: (Sc 4, dec) x 3. (15 sts)
R36: (Sc 3, dec) x 3. (12 sts)
R37: (Sc+hdc in first st, hdc+sc in next st, sl st in next st) x 4. (4 petals total)

Fasten off with a long tail for sewing the top of the tulip.

LEAF (x2)

Note: (1) I like to start out with a long tail to sew the leaf onto the amigurumi at the end.
(2) For step-by-step written and photo tutorial on this section, check out my Basic Crochet Leaf pattern.
Start with leaf-colored yarn (green).

  1. Ch 8.
  2. Now, work down one end of the ch. In 2nd ch from hook: sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr 2, dc+dc+hdc in last ch.
  3. Continue on the other side of the ch. Hdc+dc+dc in first ch, tr 2, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. Fasten off and weave in end.

~ FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS~

  1. Cut a piece of a wooden, disposable chopstick (or you may use wires/pipe cleaners) and insert it down the stem.  This will provide your tulip stem with rigidity and allow it to remain straight.
  2. Lightly stuff the tulip portion with fiberfill stuffing.
  3. With yarn needle, sew opposite ends of tulip.  Then, sew the other pair of opposite ends together. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
  4. Position and sew the leaves however you’d like!
