Crochet Wolf Pattern: Luis Lobo

I’m kicking off the fourth annual Softie Crochet Along with CAL Central with a crochet wolf pattern. Luis Lobo is an adorable, rag-doll style, wolf amigurumi pattern. Luis Lobo is more friend than predator and a faux fur yarn gives him fun, textured fur to cuddle.

The Softie Crochet Along is one of my favorite CAL Central events of the year. To get ready for this year’s CAL, I asked my online buddies what animals were the most popular with their kids these days. One answer that kept popping up was wolf. Side note: Wolves were recently removed from the endangered species list in the contiguous United States.

A few months back, King Cole yarn sent me three new shades in Luxury Fur, a really delightful faux fur yarn, and one was called Wolf. You can find Luxury Fur through your local yarn shop, or online at LoveCrafts or Wool Warehouse (UK). Anyway, the idea for an amigurumi wolf started percolating in my mind.

I wanted to make a wolf that seemed friendly, and that combined Luxury Fur while also having some smoother areas.

I hope you like the results as much as I do! Luis Lobo has floppy, rag-dolly style limbs with an oversized head. He is also just a tad on the portly side.

I used Fairfield Poly-Fil Crafter’s Choice Dry Packing Fiber Fill for my version. It makes stuffing a bit easier, which is helpful when you’re also contending with the faux fur. If you use Fairfield Poly-Fil Fiber Fill instead, your finished Luis Lobo will be even just a bit softer and cuddlier than mine.

Pattern Notes

  • Exact gauge for this pattern isn’t critical. Choose a hook size and tension so stitches are tight and fiber filling doesn’t show through stitches.
  • When choosing colors, note that CA is used for top of Head, most of Torso, Tail, and tops of Legs and Arms. CB is used for bottom of Head, Chest, and bottom of Legs and Arms.
  • Head, Torso, Legs, and Arms are crocheted in the round in spirals without joining. Move up stitch marker at the end of each round to mark position.
  • Ears and Tail are crocheted flat in rows.
  • If you are new to crochet, or new to crocheting amigurumi, you may wish to use a smooth yarn for CA instead of a faux fur yarn so you can see your stitches better. Choose a yarn in the same weight as CB.
  • Stacey Trock has a helpful video tutorial for changing colors in single crochet here.
  • Moogly has helpful videos for identifying the front and back loops in crochet here.
  • A helpful tutorial for seaming with the single crochet is available here.
  • A helpful tutorial for seaming with the whipstitch is available here.

Assembly and Finishing

  • Position first safety eye on final row of CA on Head, 4 stitches to the side of pf stitch Nose. When satisified with position, attach firmly by securing washer in back. Repeat for second safety eye.
  • Stuff Head firmly with fiber filling.
  • Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from end of first Ear. Using whipstitch join (see Pattern Notes), seam first Ear at top of Head. Weave in yarn tails on inside of Head. Repeat with second Ear.
  • Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from end of Chest. Sew Chest down on to Torso, being careful not to sew through both sides of Torso. Weave in yarn tails on inside of Torso.
  • Add additional fiber filling to Head if needed. Stuff Torso with fiber filling, focusing on filling out Neck.
  • Using locking stitch markers, position Head to Neck so that Chest is centered below face. Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from end of Head. Using whipstitch join (see Pattern Notes), seam Head to Neck, adding fiber filling to Neck as you go. Weave in yarn tails on inside of Neck.
  • Stuff Torso firmly. Stuff Arms and Legs. I found it necessary to use the stuffing tool included in the Poly-Fil bag to get the fiber filling into the Arms and Legs.
  • Thread yarn needle with yarn tail from bottom of Torso. Seam the Torso closed using a whipstitch join, adding fiber filling as necessary. Weave in yarn tails on inside of Torso. Thread yarn needle with yarn tail from end of first Arm. Seam the first Arm closed using a whipstitch join. Attach the first Arm to the Torso, using photos as placement guide. Repeat for second Arm. Thread yarn needle with yarn tail from end of first Leg. Seam the first Leg closed using a whipstitch join. Attach the first Leg to the bottom of the Torso, using photos as placement guide. Repeat for second Leg. Weave in yarn tails on inside of Torso.
  • Thread yarn needle with yarn tail from end of Tail. Seam the Tail to the back of the Torso using the whipstitch join. Weave in yarn tails on inside of Torso.

  1. So much fun – thanks! FYI, when I stitch closed the torso I changed it up a bit and actually weaved the yarn tail through each of the stitches at the bottom all the way around and then pulled tight to cinch it. From there I then did a few whipstitches to close out any remaining holes. Basically I did what you often do to close out the top of a beanie. This way the bottom is rounded out rather than flattened (and he actually has a butt to sit on) – if that makes sense. Just wanted to pass this along as an extra option.
