About These Santa Baby Mittens

  • It’s a wonderful Christmas crochet gift idea for beginners as the pattern only uses simple stitches…if you know how to single crochet, half double crochet, chain and slip stitch you can make these Santa mittens.
  • They work up quickly (you can complete this pattern before the end of your favorite Christmas movie!) and uses only a small amount of yarn (way less than a quarter of a skein in total).
  • Designed to 6 month old baby but can be made bigger or smaller by adjusting your hook size.
  • This Santa Baby Mittens Crochet Pattern is written in English for right-handed crochet using standard US crochet terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terminology, check out my US to UK Conversion Chart.

Christmas Crochet Baby Mittens Pattern Details

Size

Finished mittens sizing using worsted weight yarn and an H/8 hook for the mitten and the an G/6 hook for the cuff/ribbing:

  • Mitten length (from tip of finger to bottom of cuff): 5 inches
  • Width of widest part of hand: 3 inches
  • Width of cuff: 2.5 inches

Materials

Yarn: Any worsted weight (4) for the mittens and bulky fleece (5) yarn for the fluffy top.

For the mittens, I used Loops & Threads Impeccable Yarn, Solid. This yarn is medium (4) weight and 100% acrylic. The size is 4.5 oz / 127.5 g. A skein is 285 yd./260m and you only need way less than quarter a skein in total.

I used the color “Cherry” for the main part of the mittens, “Black” for the belt, and the color “Sunny Day” for the belt buckle.

For the fluffy top of the mittens, I used Bernat Pipsqueak. This yarn is bulky (5) weight. The size is 3.50 oz. / 100 g. A skein is 101 yd / 92 m. You only need a few yards. The exact color is called “Whitey White.”

Sizes of Crochet Hooks:

  • H/8 (5.00mm) for the main part of the mitten
  • G/6 (4.00mm) for the cuff/ribbing
  • F/5 3.75 mm for the belt buckle

Other: Yarn Needle, Scissors,

Abbreviations

  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

Pattern Notes

  • The mittens are worked from the top down.
  • They are worked in the round. Do not turn work after a ch 1, continue crocheting in same direction.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Always start in the same st as the chain.
  • To begin the pattern, I recommend starting with a magic ring/circle. If you need help creating a magic ring/circle, Crochet365KnitToo has a great step by step photo tutorial here.

Christmas Crochet Mittens Pattern Instructions

Mittens

Create a magic ring/circle.

Round 1: hdc 6 times into magic ring/circle. Pull tight. Join with a sl st into 1st hdc. (6 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1. 2 hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st into 1st hdc. (12 sts)

Round 3: Ch 1. 2 hdc in first st and 1 hdc in next st. Repeat *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st* around. Join with a sl st in 1st hdc. (18 sts)

Round 4, 5 & 6: Ch 1. hdc in first st and in each st around. Join with a sl st in 1st hdc. (18 sts)

Round 7: Ch 1. hdc2tog, hdc. Repeat *hdc2tog, hdc* around. Join with a sl st in 1st hdc. (12 sts)

Belt

Round 8: Change color: attach black yarn with a sl st. You can leave the red yarn attached (as long as it’s hanging on the wrong side, which will be the inside of your mittens) and pick it back up again after the belt is completed. With black yarn, ch 1 and sc in each st around. sl st in 1st sc to join (12 sts).

Round 9: Still with black yarn, ch 1 and sc in each st around. sl st in 1st sc to join (12 sts).

Mittens Cuff

Change hook size to G/6 4.00mm (or one size smaller from the hook size you were using). Here’s a Crochet Hook Sizes Chart for easy reference.

Change color: attach red yarn with a sl st. Fasten off black yarn and leave a tail to weave in loose ends.

Step 1: With red yarn, ch 5.

Step 2: In 2nd ch from hook, sc into back ridge loop. (Interweave has a great diagram of where the back ridge loop is here). sc into each back ridge loop down ch (4 sc).

Step 3: sl st into the next 2 stitches to attach the cuff to the mitten. Ensure the first st that you sl st into is not the current st that the ch is attached to. Ch 1 and turn.

Step 4: Skip the two sl sts you just made. sc into the back loops only of the last sc you made (the bottom of the chain). sc into each back loop up the chain (4 sc). Ch 1 and turn.

Step 5: sc back down into the back loops only (4 sc). Sl st into the next st of the mitten (not the st attached). Sl st into the following st. Ch 1 and turn.

Colors in picture are different than pattern to make the stitches easier to see.

Repeat this process of skipping the two slip stitches, then working up into the back loops only, ch 1 and turn, work down, slip stitch into the next two stitches all the way around.

When you’ve slipped stitched into the last two stitches of the mitten (there are no more stitches to attach the cuff to), do not chain. Slip stitch into the outside loops of both sides to join together. Sl st into each of the outside loops of both sides all the way up (4 sl sts in total).

Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Turn right side out.

Fluffy White “Fur”

Attach the fluffy white yarn around the spot where you just fastened off. With fluffy white yarn, ch 1 and sc into the end of each row of ribbing, ensuring that you are sc evenly around. Join with a sl st to 1st sc.

Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Belt Buckle

With F/5 (3.75mm) hook and golden yellow yarn, ch 14.

Where to crochet in the chain

1st Rectangle Side (short): In 2nd ch from hook, sl st into back ridge loop. In next ch, sl st into back ridge loop. In next ch, sl st x 3 into same back ridge loop.

2nd Rectangle Side (long): sl st into next 3 back ridge loops. In next ch, sl st x 3 into same back ridge loop.

3rd Rectangle Side (short): sl st into next 2 back ridge loops. In next ch, sl st x 3 into same back ridge loop.

4th Rectangle Side (long): sl st into next 3 back ridge loops. sl st into 1st sl st to join.

Fasten off leaving a 12″ tail. Weave in the first end to belt buckle. Using a yarn needle, attach belt buckle to bootie on the front center of bootie with the rows of black in the middle.
