Herringbone Slouchy Beanie Crochet Pattern

I’m joining Christine from Sweet Potato 3 for the third year in a row as part of her seventh annual Crochet Cancer Challenge. My design for this year is the Herringbone Slouchy Beanie, a cozy pom pom hat available in nine sizes from newborn through adult large.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you may know that my maternal grandmother taught me to crochet. In 2007, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Losing her was devastating and I still miss her so much. When Christine inviting me to join her seventh annual Crochet Cancer Challenge, I chose to make a design with purple yarn. Not because it’s pretty (which it is!) and because it’s associated with royalty (which it also is!), but because it’s the awareness color for pancreatic cancer.

By the way, during my grandmother’s illness, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network helped my family get the information we needed. I hope you never have to use their services, but I’m glad they are available to help.

Now, truth be told I cannot imagine my grandmother wearing a slouchy hat but I personally do love to wear them and they are more comfortable for wearing a hat indoors. Since many people participating in the Crochet Cancer Challenge will be donating their hats to cancer care facilities or other organizations, I wanted to design a hat that was stylish and comfortable.

A charity that I’ve worked closely with in the past is Knots of Love. They have distributed over half a million (!) hats to people experiencing traumatic hair loss and blankets to neonatal intensive care units since 2007. They work with over 550 cancer treatment centers, clinics, and health care organizations across the United States. And, they have a list of yarns you are required to use to ensure your hat is actually soft and comfortable for someone who has no hair. My favorite yarn on that list is Lion Brand Heartland, and they happen to have a stunning purple colorway called Hot Springs. I decided to pair it with Katmei, a silver-y gray. You could make your version in one color, or even use a third color for the pom pom.

If you’ve never done the herringbone double crochet, or crocheted in the back loop, or cinched a slouchy hat closed, don’t worry! I have linked up tutorials in the pattern to help you out.
