A few years ago, I designed the Auntie Em Twister Hat for Sweet Potato 3’s annual Crochet Cancer Challenge.
I had a lot of fun with that pattern so I thought a variation in a medium weight yarn would be nice for the fall. If you haven’t already guessed, one of my favorite medium weight yarns is Lion Brand Heartland. As of today, I have designed 22 patterns in it. So, yeah, I kinda like it.
Both the Beanie With a Twist and the Auntie Em Twister Hat are a lot easier to crochet than you would guess.
That’s because the twist is created by crocheting half double crochet variations in the round. Pretty simple stuff, but it looks hard. My favorite kind of pattern! For this version, I skipped the pom pom, but of course you could add one if you prefer.

Beanie With a Twist
Half Double Crochet Beanie Pattern by Underground Crafter
This textured beanie uses a simple, repetitive stitch combination to create a twist. If you like this pattern, try the Auntie Em Twister Hat in 6 sizes.
Finished Size
- Teen/Adult: 9” (23 cm) height x 21” (53.5 cm) circumference.
Materials
- Lion Brand Heartland yarn (100% acrylic, 5 oz/142 g, 251 yd/230 m) – 1 skein each in 180 Kings Canyon (CA) and 174 Joshua Tree (CB), or approximately 55 yd (50.5 m) in CA and 150 yd (137 m) in CB in any medium weight yarn.
- US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- US Size I-9/5.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
- Locking stitch marker.
- Yarn needle.
Gauge
- 10 sc = 2.25” (6 cm) across with smaller hook. For best fit, always check your gauge.
Abbreviations Used in This Pattern
- 3L – third (back) loop
- 3Ldec – third loop decrease – [Yo, insert hook in 3L of next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook. (See Pattern Notes.)
- BL – back loop
- CA – Color A
- CB – Color B
- ch – chain
- FL – front loop
- FLdec – front loop decrease – [Yo, insert hook in FL of next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook. (See Pattern Notes.)
- hdc – half double crochet
- rep – repeat
- sc – single crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together (decrease) – [Insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Fiber Flux has a helpful video tutorial for this stitch here.
- sl st – slip stitch
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- yo – yarn over
- *Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.

Pattern Notes
- Moogly has helpful videos for identifying the front and back loops here and for identifying the third loop here.
- The 3Ldec and FLdec are variations on the hdc2tog decrease. A helpful video tutorial for the hdc2tog is shown below. When working the decreases for this pattern, be sure to insert the hook into the appropriate loop (third or front) as indicated.

- Hat Band is crocheted flat in rows until it reaches desired hat circumference length. After seaming Hat Band, stitches are picked up along long edge of seamed Hat Band. Hat is worked even in unjoined spirals and then decreased towards crown.
Pattern Instructions
Hat Band
- With CA and smaller hook, ch 11.
- Row 1: Turn, skip first ch, sc in next ch and each ch across. (10 sts)
- Row 2: Turn, ch 1, scBL in first st and each st across.
- Rep Row 2 until Hat Band measures approximately 21” (53.5 cm) long. Do not fasten off.
- Fold Hat Band in half along long edge so short edges are lined up. Join short edges with slip stitch seam (see Pattern Notes). Do not fasten off.
Pick Up Stitches Along Hat Band
- Begin working in the round along long edge/joined circumference.
- Set Up Round: Ch 1, work 80 sc evenly around long edge (or any multiple of 8 sts), fasten off CA, join CB with sl st to first sc. Place stitch marker in last st and move up each Round to mark position. (80 sts)
Work Even
- Switch to larger hook.
- Round 1: Hdc in each st around.
- Round 2: *HdcFL in next 4 sts, hdc3L in next 4sts; rep from * around.
- Rep Round 2 until hat measures 7.5” (19 cm), or approximately 1.5” (4 cm) shorter than desired final height.
Decrease Towards Crown
- Round 3: *FLdec, hdcFL in next 2 sts, 3Ldec, hdc3L in next 2 sts; rep from * around. (60 sts)
- Round 4: *HdcFL in next st, FLdec, hdc3L in next st, 3Ldec; rep from * around. (40 sts)
- Round 5: *FLdec, 3Ldec; rep from * around. (20 sts)
- Round 6: Sc2tog around. (10 sts)
- Round 7: Rep Round 6. (5 sts)
- Remove stitch marker. Fasten off with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/30.5 cm in length) for closing top of hat.
Finishing
- Thread yarn needle with yarn tail, use yarn needle to seam crown of hat closed.
- With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of hat.
