Cat Gift Card Buddy is your new tiny gift-giving assistant. It keeps gift cards safe while looking absolutely adorable. Perfect for birthdays, holidays, teacher gifts, stocking stuffers, or just because, this cat is the kind of keepsake people will want to keep long after the card is spent.

This no-sew pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms, complete with clear instructions and video tutorial to help you along the way. Cat Gift Card Buddy is crocheted in the round/continuous spirals without joining the rounds. I suggest using a stitch marker or different color yarn to keep track of each round. Cat Gift Card Buddy is approximately 3.75 inches (to top of ears) tall when crocheted in super bulky (6) chenille yarn and approximately 3.25 inches (to top of ears) tall when crocheted in bulky (5) yarn. Be aware that size may vary depending on the yarn and hook size used. Gauge is not particularly important, just be consistent with the tension you are using. And most importantly, have fun!

Cat Gift Card Buddy Pattern Example
If a line is written with a single “inc”, “dec” or “sc” – make one single crochet increase, decrease, or single crochet into one stitch only.
(inc, sc) 6 times {18 sts}
(2 single crochets in one stitch, then single crochet in the next stitch) – repeat that sequence a total of 6 times for a total of 18 stitches
(dec, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times {18 sts}
(join 2 single crochets into 1, and then single crochet in next 2 stitches) – repeat that sequence a total of 6 times for a total of 18 stitches

Make a slipknot and chain 12

R1: sc in the 2nd chain from hook, sc in next 10 ch sts

Working down the other side of the chain

sc in next 11 ch sts {22 sts}

We’re working in continuous rounds. Place a stitch marker in the last stitch of the round and continue to crochet into the next stitch.

Make sure R1 measures at least 3.25 inches long (8.25 cm).

*If R1 is smaller than 3.25 inches, go up a hook size and start R1 over.

*If R1 is a bit bigger than 3.25 inches, stay the same hook size and continue on to R2.

R2-10: sc in next 22 sts {22 sts}

R11 we’re making the ears. Using stitch markers, mark the back loops only of stitch 5 and stitch 10 before you begin crocheting. The ears will be worked into the front loops of the marked stitches. I also suggest marking the last sc of the ear with a stitch marker. Helpful for R12.

R11: sc in next 4 sts, [ear: in next flo sc, hdc, dc, then ch 1, hdc, sc all in same st], sc in next 4 sts, [ear: in next flo sc, hdc, dc, then ch 1, hdc, sc all in same st], sc in next 12 sts {22 sts}

For R12: As we work this round, we will work into the back loops that we marked for R11 and not into the stitches of the ear. After you work into the back loops, reach your hook over into the next stitch - the one next to your marked ear stitch.

R12: sc in next 4 sts, sc into marked back loop st, sc in next 4 sts, sc into marked back loop st, sc in next 12 sts {22 sts}

Secure working yarn with a stitch marker. Place 14mm safety eyes between R7 and R8, leaving 3 stitches open between the eyes. Don’t secure eyes just yet. With pink or black thread, create a nose by embroidering a line between the eyes (R7 and R8). Find the middle of your nose and embroider a vertical line going down one round. Embroider three lines, next to the eye, on each cheek to make whiskers. Secure safety eyes.

R13: (dec, sc in next 4 sts) 3 times, dec, sc in next 2 sts {18 sts}

Leave a long tail and fasten off or make a seamless join.
