Finley The Fox

Finley The Fox is a handsome lil’ guy who’s quick witted and fun to be around. He can’t wait for you to create him so he can keep you company.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

The pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms, complete with clear instructions, pictures, and full video tutorial to help you along the way. Finley The Fox is crocheted in continuous spirals without joining the rounds.  I suggest using a stitch marker or different color yarn to keep track of each round. Finley The Fox is crocheted in worsted weight yarn and is approximately 5.5 inches tall (including ears).  Be aware that size may vary depending on the yarn and hook size used. Gauge is not particularly important, just be consistent with the tension you are using. And most importantly, have fun!

Finley The Fox Pattern Example

If a line is written with a single  “inc”, “dec” or “sc” with nothing after it – make one increase, decrease, or single crochet into one stitch only.

6 sc into a Magic Circle  {6 sts}
R1 starts with 6 single crochet in a magic circle
Alternate way to begin:
chain 2, sc 6 times in 2nd chain from hook  {6 sts}

(inc, sc) 6 times {18 sts}
(2 single crochets into a stitch, then single crochet in the next stitch) – repeat that sequence a total of 6 times for a total of 18 stitches

(dec, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times {18 sts}
(join 2 single crochets into 1, and then single crochet in next 2 stitches) – repeat that sequence a total of 6 times for a total of 18 stitches

sc in next 8 sts, dec, inc in next 4 sts, sc in next 8 sts
single crochet into each of the first 8 stitches, join 2 single crochet into 1, then make 2 single crochets into one stitch for the next 4 stitches, single crochet into each of the last 8 stitches

  • R18: (dec, sc in next 4 sts) 6 times {30 sts}
  • R19: (dec, sc in next 3 sts) 6 times {24 sts}

    We're going to switch gears for a minute and crochet into the front loops of R7 so we can place the eyes and mouth. Place a stitch marker in your last stitch so the yarn doesn't unravel.

  • Note: Ch 1 does not count as a stitch, single crochet into the first stitch.
  • R1: With the top of the head facing you, insert your hook into the first stitch of the exposed front loops of Rd 7.

    The stitch all the way to the right.

  • Attach a piece of brown yarn with a single crochet, and then sc across the row, chain 1, turn {8 sts}
  • R2: dec, sc in next 6 sts, ch 1, turn {7 sts}

    The last stitch may be tight to work into since that is where we attached the yarn.

  • R3: dec, sc in next 5 sts, ch 1, turn {6 sts}
  • R4: dec, sc in next 4 sts, ch 1, turn {5 sts}
  • R5: dec, sc in next 3 sts, ch 1, turn {4 sts}
  • R6: dec, sc in next 2 sts, ch 1, turn {3 sts}
  • R7: dec, sc, ch 1, turn {2 sts}
  • R8: dec {1 st}
  • Fasten off and leave a tail. Weave in all ends.
  • Eye and Nose Placement: Use these instructions as a guideline. Feel free to secure the eyes and nose in different rounds as looks right to you.
  • Insert 18mm safety nose into the tip (Rd 8) of the flap.

    Since the back of the nose goes through one stitch, it can be a bit tough to get into.

  • Then insert the nose between Rd 15 and 16 of the head.
  • Insert 12mm safety eyes between Rd 13 and 14 of the head, leaving at least one stitch open next to the flap.
  • Secure the nose and eyes and continue crocheting.
  • Begin to stuff the head and cheeks and continue as you crochet.
  • R20: (dec, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times {18 sts}
  • R21: (dec, sc) 6 times {12 sts}
  • R22: (dec) 6 times {6 sts}
  • Fasten off and leave a long piece of yarn to sew the head shut. Set aside until assembly.
