Graduation Hat Pencil Topper

Free Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

This crochet Graduation Hat Pencil Topper is a charming keepsake, perfect for marking a special milestone. Slip it onto the end of any pen or pencil to instantly turn everyday writing into a reminder of hard work and achievement.

Skill Level: Beginner

This no-sew pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms, complete with clear instructions and video tutorial to help you along the way. Graduation Hat Pencil Topper is crocheted in the round/continuous spirals without joining the rounds. I suggest using a stitch marker or different color yarn to keep track of each round. Graduation Hat Pencil Topper is crocheted in worsted weight yarn and is approximately 1.5 inches tall. Be aware that size may vary depending on the yarn and hook size used. Gauge is not particularly important, just be consistent with the tension you are using. And most importantly, have fun!

Before you begin to crochet, make your tassel or have a purchased tassel nearby. I don’t have a video on how to make a tassel but there are quite a few on YouTube:) The tassels I used are called bookmark tassels and they are 5 inches long (tassel is ~3 inches long and the loop is ~2 inches long).

For this pattern you can crochet R2-R6 with the wrong side facing you, like I do in the video, or turn your work inside out at R4 and continue crocheting the next two rounds. R1-R6 is the post for the pencil.

Fasten off and leave a long piece of yarn to sew the head shut. Right before you insert the yarn needle into the 8th stitch, add the loop of your tassel onto your yarn needle and then go into your 8th stitch. Close the hole tight. Weave in the yarn well to make sure the tassel is secure. Cut off any excess yarn.

Turn the piece over so the pencil hole is at the top. Place a slipknot onto your hook and place the hook into the back loop only stitch from R16 (the bottom stitch).

Leave a long tail. Make a seamless join by pulling the yarn through the last stitch instead of fastening off.

  • Thread the remaining yarn through a yarn needle and insert the needle under both loops of the stitch to the left of the last stitch - from outside to inside. Then insert your needle through the middle of the V - of the last crocheted stitch to the right - from outside to inside.
  • Weave in all ends.
  • Place your graduation hat onto a pencil or pen and enjoy!!!
