Blu The Bird

Blu The Bird is a small, but confident guy. He flutters his small wings and makes his way through all the bird feeders in the neighborhood.

Skill Level: Beginner

The pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms, complete with clear instructions and pictures to help you along the way. Blu The Bird is crocheted in continuous spirals without joining the rounds. I suggest using a stitch marker or different color yarn to keep track of each round. I place my locking stitch marker in the last stitch of the round, but please place your stitch marker in your preferred spot (last stitch of the round or first stitch of the round).Blu The Bird is crocheted in worsted weight yarn and is approximately 5 inches tall. Be aware that the final size may vary depending on the yarn and hook size used. Gauge is not particularly important, just be consistent with the tension you are using. And, most importantly, have fun!

Blu The Bird Pattern Example

If a line is written with a single “inc”, “dec” or “sc” with nothing after it – make one increase, decrease, or single crochet into one stitch only.

6 sc into a Magic Circle {6 sts}
R1 starts with 6 single crochet in a magic circle
Alternate way to begin: chain 2, sc 6 times in 2nd chain from hook {6 sts}

(inc, sc in next 2 sts) 2 times {8 sts}
(2 single crochets into a stitch, then single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches) – repeat that sequence a total of 2 times for a total of 8 stitches

(dec, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times {18 sts}
(join 2 single crochets into 1, and then single crochet in next 2 stitches) – repeat that sequence a total of 6 times for a total of 18 stitches

R3: (inc, sc in next 2 sts) 3 times {12 sts}

Embroider beak:
Thread a long piece of yellow yarn into an embroidery or yarn needle and knot one end. Insert the needle between a stitch of R13/R14.
Embroider over 3 stitches between R12/R13. Begin by placing the needle between stitch 1 and stitch 2.
Go back up through the same stitch between R13/R14.
Place the needle into stitch 2, then go back up through the same stitch between R13/R14.
Place the needle between stitch 2 and 3, then go back up through the same stitch between R13/R14.
Place the needle into stitch 3, then go back up through the same stitch between R13/R14.
Place the needle into stitch 1.
Place your needle through one end of the beak between R12/R13.
Finish off by embroidering a horizontal line across the top.
Secure with a knot on the inside of the head.
Place 9mm eyes between R12/13. Leaving one stitch between the beak and eye. Feel free to embroider eyelashes if you'd like.
R16: (dec, sc in next 4 sts) 6 times {30 sts}
R17: (dec, sc in next 3 sts) 6 times {24 sts}
Begin to stuff the head and continue as you crochet.
R18: (dec, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times {18 sts}
